(1,486 posts)and how many of their victims get pregnant?

(4,033 posts)This is not snark. I really do not understand. Currently, anyone, male or female, at any age, can walk into any drug or convenience store in the country (not to mention a number of public restrooms) and buy condoms. Condoms are primarily designed to prevent the sperm from reaching a fertile egg, thus preventing pregnancy. (Yes, I know that they also serve the purpose of preventing the transmission of STDs, but that's not why they were invented.)
The so-called morning after pill does exactly the same thing - it prevents the sperm from reaching a fertile egg, thus preventing pregnancy. So why is there such an uproar over females taking responsibility for preventing their own pregnancy, when it seems to be perfectly OK for a male to take responsibility for getting a female pregnant? Why aren't they screaming that being able to buy rubbers is a good deal for pedophiles and statutory rapists.
And just for snark, could Laura explain to me how someone could commit statutory rape against an old woman, as opposed to a young girl?
Ilsa
(61,698 posts)Non compos mentis due to illness or developmental disability could be statutorily raped. She might say yes to her perpetrator who knows she has no legal capacity. Happens with caregivers.
Are you saying the burden of preventing pregnancy via daily birth control should be on the woman because she should fear being raped, any time, any day? What if she's been traumatized and doesn't remember to get the money for contraception?
What if she is a young woman in college, not in a relationship because she's on scholarship and shes devoting her energies to finishing, not dating? Is she supposed to be on birth control in case she gets raped?
Do lesbians need to be on the pill because they can expect to be raped and impregnated?
Is every little girl who has gone through menarche supposed to be on the pill or expected to buy contraception!
Have you ever taken care of a rape victim? Do you know the myriad possibilities of how traumatized they can be?
This isn't snark; please explain yourself.

(4,033 posts)1. In common law, 'statutory rape' is almost invariably used to mean an older man engaging in sex with a female who is past puberty but still younger than the 'age of consent'. I was simply commenting that 'statutory rape' is normally used in conjunction with 'young' women, so the comment about 'statutorily raping young girls' seemed to be somewhat redundant and was wondering why the speaker needed to qualify her comment that way.
2. My basic comment had absolutely nothing to do with rape. It had to do with the frenzy about the 'morning after' pill being sold over the counter to anyone. The morning after pill is a method of contraception for women, and the conservatives seem to be going bananas over it. I was simply questioning why it is OK for anyone to buy condoms, which are a male form of birth control, but somehow it is not OK for women to buy birth control. Granted, condoms are used 'before' and the morning after pill is used 'after', but the end result is the same, conception is prevented. It doesn't have to be rape. It can be completely consensual, but 'unprotected' sex, with a morning after realization of OMG. That was the point that I didn't understand. I would suspect that the vast majority of women who would avail themselves of the morning after pill would fall into the OMG category, not the 'I've just been raped' category.
I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say. Sorry if it was misunderstood.
Ilsa
(61,698 posts)I thought you were placing the onus of post-rape birth control on the victim, obviously. I've known rape victims who were so traumatized, they lost half their vocabulary, had difficulty concentrating on driving, etc.
To answer your question: it boils down to this idea that conservatives have that women shouldn't be allowed control over their reproduction, so they define "life" as the moment of conception. They would do away with birth control pills that prevent conception if they could. They have a pre-Griswold vs Connecticutt view of contraception.
Stonepounder
(4,033 posts)I don't understand them getting to up in arms against women using birth control, while not having any problem with men using condoms. They seek to regulate all forms of female contraception - the pill, diaphrams, IUDs, etc. need a prescription from a doctor. Now comes the morning after pill that is most assuredly NOT an abortifact, and can be bought OTC, and the Right goes bat-shit crazy.
The only conclusion I can come to is that they want to put women back into second-class status - entities who cannot make decisions for themselves and are totally dependent on men for what they can and cannot do (The Handmaiden's Tale anyone?). But if that is what they really want, how in the world do they get female spokespeople to espouse this this POV?
That's the part where I really get lost.

(22,504 posts)that if rapists and pedophiles gave a shit about whether or not their victims became pregnant they would use a condom. But they don't give a shit so they don't use condoms. And they would not shove a morning after pill down their victim's throats because they still would still not give a shit.
(Unless they are related or the victim is in their life for any other reason)

(51,725 posts)Apparently, her reasoning is the by aborting the fetus, you are destroying evidence against the rapist/pedophile. Not really, you dumbshit. You still have the fetus, that can be tested just like a live baby can, and without ruining the girl's life.
