Obama’s speech was an echo of everyone’s plea for global sanity. "Can’t we all just get along?" The problem is the fundamental belief that ends can sometimes justify horrible means. The gassing of Syrian neighborhoods is justified as a means of enforcing political stability. Terrible reasoning perhaps, but hardly unique. For generations the atomic bombing of Japanese cities which killed thousands of civilians has been justified as having been necessary to end the war efficiently. Brutal means but necessary. Even within Obama’s same speech the use of killer drones (a terror weapon if there ever was one) is justified ironically by its hope to end terror.
