Former Marine Protests Photo ID to Vote Law on Election Day

Uploaded by tncitizenaction on Mar 6, 2012

Former Marine Tim Thompson protested Tennessee's new photo ID to vote law on Super Tuesday by showing up at his precinct to vote, but refusing to show a picture ID. He left without voting, even though he has proper identification, saying he was protesting on behalf of the potentially millions of people who may lose their right to vote because they are unable to obtain the legally required government-issued IDs.

Good to see the video.

Now, I'm not big on this notion that just because someone served in the military that somehow that makes their citizenship more important than anyone else's.

However --- this really points out the big, big problem with these oppressive voter ID laws. There is no doubt that this fellow is a citizen and and is qualified to vote. Yet because of these overt Tea Party and Repuglican measures to suppress the vote in this country in 2012, this American is denied his rights.

This good guy had the ability and courage to stand up for his right to vote ... it won't come so easy for people like that 93 year-old African American woman and others like her who don't have 'approved' IDs.

Repuglicans should be shamed for this latest tactic to keep American citizens from participating in OUR democracy.

I just worked 14 hours today at a precinct in SW Ohio as polling official. If the polling official rejected the ID then the person should have been allowed to vote provisionally or he could have produced an electric or other utility bill, that is what is currently allowed in Ohio. There is a problem now because the Ohio House is trying to pass a new law (HB148?) that would require voters to produce a government issued photo ID and will eliminate utility bills as proof of identification. DAMN, the fucking republicans are trying to disenfranchise the voters of this country.

but I just spend 14 hours working as a polling judge in SW Ohio. If that person came into the precinct I was working and would not produce the proper ID or vote provisionally and then would not leave if he was not going to vote there would be a chance the police would have been called and he would have been arrested. The person on this video was threatening and I have been in the situation before in 2008. There is no need for this behavior. Talking to a polling official is not going to change the laws that we has polling officials are obligated to follow, no matter how stupid they might be. We have no choice but to follow the voter ID laws of the state in which we work otherwise we are in jeopardy of being arrested for election fraud.

I submit that everyone should go to the polls with as many forms of valid ID as possible. Driver's licenses, birth certificates, passports, school ID, military ID, copies of mortgages or leases to prove residence, even electric bills. ANY legal document that could possibly be used to prove you are who you say you are and that validate your address. I realize they would only look at one or two, but the point would be driven home. This type of law is wrong-headed and needs to receive as much civil disobedience as possible without further disenfranchising anybody.
