(27,247 posts)The October 25 (October 26 in Japan) earthquake happened at 2:10 this morning Japan time, when it is very dark, yet that video was clearly taken in the daytime.

ara ara... and I bet that got a ton of hits... Next we will hear they shook the camera while someone added sound affects.

(27,247 posts)because I felt it where I was, and it was still quite dark outside. So my first reaction after watching that video was to check to see if there had been another earthquake after sunrise, but there hadn't been any of that scale, and certainly nothing of that duration, so I knew that video had to be a hoax. Also, an earthquake lasting that long and of that intensity is bound to cause some major damage somewhere, yet the highest recorded intensity on the Japanese scale of that particular earthquake was only a 4, meaning that some things might have fallen off shelves.
It is easy to hear "Magnitude 7.1" and think that it is a really bad earthquake, and lesser magnitudes have caused damage in many places around the world. But in Japan, many earthquakes occur offshore, so to get a better idea of potential damage, the Japanese use another scale to measure intensity. A level of 4 can be a little unnerving, but it is usually no big deal.
But the recent typhons *have* been a big deal in some places. For example, on the remote island of Izu-Oshima, typhoons combined with a massive landslide recently wiped out dozens of homes, with 7 people known dead and dozens of others unaccounted for.
(This video is from Asahi Network News, so I would assume it is authentic)
