(8,021 posts)ALEC was instrumental in getting stand your ground legislation passed in many states, but then after the Trayvon Martin case, big companies supporting ALEC started bailing due to bad publicity. ALEC is now launching a "Prodigal Son Project" to try to woo these companies back.

(5,005 posts)"Stand your ground" and "Castle doctrine" laws.
Stand your ground applies anywhere outside the home and removes the obligation of a citizen to flee a confrontation.
Castle doctrine applies only inside the home, where a homeowner may use deadly force to repel an intruder.
I don't know if this was a deliberate attempt to conflate the two, but it's certainly sloppy to do so.
Many years ago, Massachusetts, which has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, did not have a castle doctrine law. In other words, you were required to flee if someone invaded your home. This was immensely unpopular and was changed under governor Bill Weld. Now, under certain circumstances, homeowners are immune from being prosecuted for self-defense in their domiciles. The special circumstances take into account the nature of the intrusion (so that you don't shoot any Halloween reveler who happens to stumble onto your doorstep) and act as a check against excessive use of the defense. You have to really be in mortal danger of being killed or grievously wounded to use the defense.
