From my understanding, if Mitt is an LDS elder, he could be ostracized for drinking beer. Even if he planned to make Sarah Pallin wife #2.

And why I believe so many drinking clubs in Salt Lake City are by membership only. That way the elders are never seen having a few. I was told by Mormons in the state that it wasn't that they didn't drink alcohol, it was that they were never seen/caught drinking it.

I think it's fine that Romney doesn't drink. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. However, if a Democratic candidate didn't drink you can bet the Right would make it an issue, "You can't even have a beer with this guy, he's so out of touch."
