David Simon at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas

(Bill Moyers thought so highly of David Simon he gave him a Segment on his Show!

David Simon at the Festival of Dangerous Ideasb
January 30, 2014

Simon began his speech by saying: “I come from a country that is now utterly schizophrenic when it comes to its society, its economy, its politics. There are definitely two Americas. I live in one, on one block in Baltimore that is part of the viable America, the America that is connected to its own economy, where there is a plausible future for the people born into it.” He then went on to take questions from the audience.

3. I watched a long time for the Questions from Audience..Media/and The People

who attended. The Q&A was as good, imho, as watching the whole address by Simon...but it does take some time to wait for it all.

Simon on his own said some interesting things about his time as News Reporter for Baltimore Sun...his family culture...and how he morphed to what he is today in Media.

So...it was "all good"...depending on the time one has for viewing.

6. "10 or 15 percent of my country is no longer necessary to the operation of our economy."

This idea is starting to sink in. Good.

We need to return to FDR's New Deal, but then we've got to go beyond that, because that 10-15% is only going to increase. This is not a cyclical thing, but a direct result of progress. The reduced need for labor is a fantastic development, in fact - it's only our moronic, outdated economic system that is turning it into a tragedy. We need to rethink a new New Deal for our 21st century economy.

10. New Deal 3.0

Someone has already called for a New Deal 2.0; but, given the pace of technological progress, we're going to need 3.0 and maybe 4.0.

Carrying this another step: When I began reading future studies in the 60s; a few brave souls were saying that: "Both capitalism and socialism as we know them are obsolete." I think it's time to start considering alternatives to both.

A paraphrase of a couple of my favorite parts:

Festival of Dangerous Ideas 2013: David Simon

7:55 ...that notion that profit is the metric by which we are going to measure the health of our society is one of the fundamental mistakes of the last 30 years. It begins, I would date it in my country, to about 1980 exactly, and it has triumphed. And ultimately the farce of this argument that seemingly where capitalism stomped the hell out of Marxism by the end of the 20th century, and was predominate in all respects. The great irony of it is that the only thing that actually works is non ideological, is impure, has elements of both arguments, and never actually achieves any kind of partisan or philosophical perfection. It’s pragmatic, it includes the best aspects of socialistic thought and of free market capitalism, and it works, because we don’t let it work entirely….

11:50.…And ultimately we abandoned that. And we believed in the idea of trickle down, and the idea of the market economy, and the market knows best. To the point where now libertarianism in my country is actually being taken seriously as an intelligent mode of political thought. It’s astonishing to me. But it is, people are saying “I don’t need anything but my ability to earn a profit. I’m not connected to society. I don’t care how the road got built, I don’t care where the firefighter comes from. I don’t care who educates the kids others than my kids. I am me.” It’s the triumph of the self. I am me, hear me roar….
