Above All Else: Keystone XL Documentary Premieres at SXSW

Published on Monday, March 10, 2014 by Above All Else

Film reveals the hidden story of how the Keystone XL pipeline battle in East Texas built a community of resistance to the climate crisis in America.

In an up-close look at one community and their fight against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, the documentary feature Above All Else premiered at the South by Southwest Film and Music Festival in Austin, Texas Monday.

Directed by filmmaker John Fiege, the film chronicles how "normal everyday folks, ranchers, farmers," became activists against the pipeline once they learned the hidden truths about the cost of drilling and transporting Alberta tar sands through their East Texas town.

Speaking with local Austin news station KVUE ahead of the premiere, Fiege along with Executive Producer Daryl Hannah said that it was inspiring to see people line up against the "Goliath" oil industry and that the battle over the Keystone pipeline was a "uniting issue" for residents from all walks interested in preserving key "life support systems," such as clean air and water.
