My older sister and I lost our mother when we were 8 and 7 respectively. We lost our father we were 18 and 17. She is only 14 months older but was, much of the time, like a mother to me growing up. I was devastated when she joined the Marines. At the time it didn't occur to me that she probably needed the Marines as much as I needed her. Her visits home were about the greatest moments in my life.
