To keep Guantanamo bay open.

Bringing him to the US for trial is political kryptonite. It's been delayed for another 4 years. Can, kicked down the road. As long as his ass is there, the base is going to stay open. (He's not alone of course, but he's the marquee prisoner.) The Republicans have crafted several tools to keep Obama/Holder/Any other judicial authority, from moving them out of that site. Obama is smart not to spend the political capital it would consume to win that fight and move them.

So the base stays open in perpetuum.


Obviously not the president's intent, I'm sure he wanted to fulfill that campaign promise. Problem is, the deck is stacked against him. Congress. Contractors. The Military. All of it.

Too many people want that base to stay open. KSM's presence is one tool to accomplish that.
