Remember when THIS used to be comedic satire, instead of mainstream political thinking?

I see that the Georgia 'GUNS EVERYWHERE' law is off to a roaring start on the first day, as a STAND YOUR GROUND moron confronts an OPEN CARRY moron, neither one of whom is sure which one of them is supposed to be the 'good guy with the gun.'

http://www.valdostadailytimes.com/todays-top-stories/x1736693358/First-day-of-new-gun-law-leads-to-arrest

Well this is nothing new. The idea of arming EVERYBODY to prevent gun violence has been around for awhile, only we USED to call this s%^!t "COMEDY."

Here, Archie Bunker explains that the way to prevent airline hijackings is to ARM EVERYBODY ON THE PLANE. In 1974 that idea was greeted with laughter. Forty years later, in 2014, it would be greeted with APPLAUSE.

Bravo! I knew it had to be performance art, because it was so stupidly ridiculous.

They could never get away with a show like that now.
Carroll O'Connor was a visionary. Archie Bunker could be the founding father of the tea party.

I don't agree with Archie Bunker, but he was hilarious because his views were so crazy wrong. Unfortunately
the tea baggers and the rest of the republican party are in line with his views so we need to do away with them...
any suggestions on how?

The whole show was a slam against narrow minded bigots. Even Nixon didn't get the joke. Lear was poking fun of them and they didn't get it. Some still don't and still admire Archie, who was really a liberal making fun of them.

...and many of us on the left, (in the 70's when this came out), feared that the satire would be lost on the average American and they'd see it only as confirmation of their 'dormant' personality. We were right as we looked around and saw more nodding heads than embarrassed face-palms.

If I were King I wouldn't allow shows like All In The Family and Duck Dynasty to be given such a public forum. It's my secret shame....

Archie's views became mainstream but so did Rob Reiner's and I think his were more important. Carrol O'Connor blamed his daughters suicide on LSD so by the time this show started he'd already lost an important chunk of the culture.

Over the top shows like Duck Dynasty are stupid but they have a captive audience so they are money-makers. That is what it is all about.

The show predicted the future of how right wingers in America think, before Ronald Reagan became a household name.
