Regardless of race (it saddens the fuck out of me to have to post that preamble), he is such a clear and clever human being. We need MORE Dr Tysons and FEWER science deniers (BTW, "science deniers" are, by definition, anti-science).

(6,335 posts)After slavery they would burn their books. Its like Pol Pot who specifically targeted those who could read or anybody who wore glasses.

(8,200 posts)I have to wonder if they are just opportunists that are willing to sacrifice their convictions to make a buck. It just floors me to hear a Black politician supporting the very policies that continue to harm their fellow African-Americans. It is amusing in a cynical way when they put the handful of African-Americans that attend their National Convention in the first row. How could these people not comprehend that they are being used?

(8,200 posts)This was a major point made by Edwards before he crashed and burned. I don't believe that Democrats stress this point strongly enough. They should list the programs that the Republicans are determined to destroy and will leave them in abject poverty. This is a major issue in regard the ACA which if repealed would subject millions to the possibility of bankruptcy. They also fail to stress the fact that in those states that have refused to expand Medicare millions of people are paying taxes for care that they have been refused, etc. etc. etc.

(57,936 posts)That is exactly what I believe. That the whole world is energy and that everything is a part of a great energy field and that, therefore we are all one, all in this together from a piece of earth to a blade of grass to humans to elephants to suns and stars, all one, all in it together. That's my belief. And that's what I call God. That oneness. So there you go. I'm not alone in that crazy belief. Very nice.

(40,416 posts)And here it is put to music by John Boswell, with NdGT, Richard Feynman, Carl Sagan, Bill Nye. Drumming supplied by Feynman. Incredible.
As Feynman says, "The inconceivable nature of Nature."
And, "I think nature's imagination is so much greater than man's. She's never going to let us relax."
Tyson: "I know that the molecules in my body are traceable to phenomena in the cosmos. That makes me want to grab people on the street, and say, 'Have you heard this!?'"

(4,473 posts)Whatever one might say about him, he would not support anti-intellectualism for an instant. Now we have the National Review attacking Tyson for being smart. And publishes the likes of Sarah Palin.
William F. Buckley! thou shouldst be alive in this hour; conservatism hath need of thee: she is a fen of stagnant waters: altar, sword, and pen

Buckley and his son craft their words in a style long forgotten by the majority with an R in their voter registration.

(4,473 posts)I will say that I used to know Buckley slightly. His political views were execrable -- he wrote a book defending Joe McCarthy -- but his charm was undeniable.

(32,727 posts)but then corrected himself. "Who's smarter than who?" She asked. Really? So he's not smart anymore because he accidentally got a date wrong (but quickly corrected himself)? I'm sure she does a great job on her show, but this was my first time seeing her and her "joke" left a bad taste. I think Bill's response to her ill timed, tone deaf comment was perfect.

(27,461 posts)getting hated by the RW is a badge of honor. Tyson earned it by getting people interested in science. Maher's joke takes that away from him a little by attributing it to his race.
