Related: About this forumNon-violent solution to the Israel/Palestine problem
http://www.democracynow.org/2014/7/31/us_jewish_leader_henry_siegman_to?autostart=trueHenry Siegman, who has been a leader in the Jewish community, was on Democracy Now this morning. At about 36:30 he suggests that the Palestinians tell Israel "OK, you won" -- that they no longer want two states. But instead of the present Apartheid arrangement they want full citizenship, with full rights, for all of Palestine. That would be Israel's worst nightmare, because Palestinians would be a majority and what Israel wants above all is a homeland for the Jews. So Israel would likely respond by truly supporting a two-state solution.
I think it's brilliant. In the face of world pressure in conjunction with nonviolent protest by Palestinians, Israel could not sustain the Apartheid state and would have to allow the two-state solution.

(1,782 posts)that would have to be overcome: resistance to any change on the part of leaders on both sides, because change could put them out of power; accumulated anger and hatred on the part of those who have suffered and may not be really interested in nonviolence; a habit of fear on the part of Israelis, who have been told for so long that Palestinians threaten the existence of their country; and special mention to Israeli leadership, even if they are covered in the first item, because they seem so bent on playing on the fears of their people no matter the consequences to the Gazans.
On the other side are the lives of all those who live in Gaza. Violence is not working.

(1,782 posts)They have a lot of global support now, because they're victims. Hate to see them have to continue to be victims to continue to get support.
Hope they can transform the support they have now into support for a non-Apartheid, egalitarian Israel. And if that doesn't work, a truly independent, autonomous Palestine.

War is not an extension of foreign policy, as practiced today war and foreign policy are no different.
The Palestinians should read, study, and then emulate the Ghandi movement in India. It's the only path and one that could capture the attention of the world in a way that wouldn't be dismissed by the few entities that allow slaughter to be used against citizens of Gaza and elsewhere.
Thanks to Henry Siegman and to you for posting this message of rationality.
