Seriously...one of the most fascinating discussions I've seen on "Cross Talk." Evan Burfield joins them for the second half for Obama Admin...point of view.CrossTalk: Game of Hawks
Does American foreign policy still have a left-right division? What is the difference between a neoconservative and a liberal interventionist? Are they only variations of being a hawk now? CrossTalking with James Carafano, Heritage Foundation, Walter Uhler, Evan Burfield

(31,235 posts)MOSCOW -- Russia's Federal Migration Service on Tuesday moved to deport the American wife of a high-profile human-rights lawyer living in St. Petersburg, labeling her "a threat to national security."
Ivan Pavlov, 43, founded the Institute for Freedom of Information Development, which he said strove to make the Russian government more transparent, in 2004. He was one of a handful of activists who met with President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the G-20 summit meeting in St. Petersburg last September.
His wife, Jennifer Gaspar, 43, has lived in Russia for a decade, working for a variety of nongovernmental organizations, including groups focused on human-rights issues and one that raised money for the storied Hermitage Museum.

(5,069 posts)I agree with Walter that US military interventions are a figleaves for penetration of the world by the 1%.
Although American culture is dominated by exceptionalism, imperialism and might makes right through administrations of many presidents....there was a time when there seemed to be a difference between hawkish Republicans and doveish Democrats...the aftermath of the Vienam War - .culmination of that difference which was used to explain George McGovern's defeat to Richard Nixon (the affect of Nixon's Watergate tricks was dismissed) in 1972, and Walter Mondale's defeat to Ronald Reagan in 1984- Mondale campaigned on a nuclear freeze.
After 1984 - in my own words - a hawkish faction within the Democratic Party blamed Mondale's and McGovern's pro-peace foreign policies for the presidential defeats in 72 and 84. This faction led a movement within the party (Al Gore figured prominently) to start the Democratic Leadership Council - a more hawkish brand of Democrat. Also known as Third Way Democrats This recasting of the Democratic Party was attributed to Clinton's ascendancy over George H W Bush in the 92 election....(Many non DLC members attribute Clinton's win to Ross Perot on the ballot which took votes away from Bush).

Clinton Presidency was characterized by the first use of NATO forces OFFENSIVELY against the Former Yugoslavia and also the first military intervention w/o UN approval....(Russia would have obviously vetoed such a NATO intervention)....This FRY intervention set a precedent for future NATO interventions in Libya, etc., etc.

(84,711 posts)here in America...that needs to be seen by "Inquiring Minds."
I always hope to "dig into the weeds" between USA and Foreign Press. While our past decades Presidents urge "Global America/Free Trade/Partnering with Allies and encouraging Partnership between others we Entice into our Global Economy"...it appears that there are those who feel GLOBAL NEWS is something to be discouraged...some even put forward Banning Global News from DU as if "Dissenting Opnions" is UnAmerican! We see this at times here on DU.
Yet we are supposed to "BUY INTO....Global America." If we don't read or have access to Global News then how can we Possibly know How to Vote or Not Vote for our Trade Policies that we Tax Payers will be asked to Pay For?
How can we be Informed if we lack access to Media outside our Borders?

(5,069 posts)because I wanted to better understand the news (grew up watching Walter Cronkite, et.al.)....But I think there is a willful ignorance in this country of not wanting to understand or be exposed to the news as it used to be which was politics.
Now news has become entertainment in the time slots previously dedicated to news.
But the willful ignorance must be stated because the US is in a position of world leadership yet we are the country most incapable of exerting 'thoughtful' leadership - just think about the lack of awareness in this country - I can name three MACRO issues - evolution, global warming and Israel/Palestine where the country is influenced by the quite ignorant religious right...it's equivalent to the Taliban making decisions for our government. AIPAC is a classic example and Christian fundies contribute to or are members of AIPAC.
I think this post illustrates - what you're talking about seeing the world through multiple lenses.

which accused the Russians of being racist.
Well I have heard Russians make racist comments before - but I don't think that was the message the Russians were conveying as much as their outrage about the (US creating) the Ukraine crisis and then blaming them for the Malaysian airline crisis . To some in the US their msg was just interpreted as racism....Each country has a lens with which to see and explain the world.
