(10,252 posts)He went in with pre-scripted questions, one of which was: "You've not said the word, 'Syria' ..." So all the time that the Prez was speaking, Todd was not listening; just waiting to get to the next part of his script.
I noticed that at one point, Todd raised his hand, as if to ask a question, and held his hand in the air during the Prez talking. Very rude. I only watched because the Prez was on. I doubt that I'll watch MTP unless there is someone really interested booked on the show. The panel was not interesting at all. It's a very boring and predictable program.

I'd recommend weighing in and letting them know. Start spreading THAT FACT. Start putting THAT out there in the public record and into the public discourse where others, maybe MANY others, can see it. Spread THAT thinking and THAT observation. Start INFLUENCING the public mindset. Maybe some of them don't see what we see on DU and would merely take posts like this at face value and file them away in the "must be true, then" file. Make sure THAT kind of comment and critique and setting-the-record-straight is in there, too. Hopefully we can include MANY of them, and not just a nauseating series of happy talk or "good start" or some such irrational and unsupportable bunk. I just did, on their Facebook page. And the day is young! Join me!!!

(45,984 posts)Does anybody feel that way?
I think there is a systemic problem at NBC. It's a corporation that really isn't interested in human affairs but rather only in maximizing profits to give higher dividends to investors. That means electing politicians who lower their taxes and even shift the cost of doing business on to the taxpayer; that in turn means environmental disasters do not get cleaned up and workplaces become accidents waiting to happen. That also means they can't give the corporations any bad publicity, which means censoring the news and even twisting it so that politicians who are seen as not being sufficiently deferential to the masters of industry are painted in a bad light. President Obama can hardly be viewed as anti-corporate. It's really a shame he didn't spend his time giving the likes of Legs Dimon and Pretty Boy Lloyd something to really complain about, starting with indictments leading to long prison sentences.
In any rational world, Chuck Todd would not survive his maiden voyage as host of Meet the Press. He was clearly more concerned about scoring propaganda points and kissing the butt of his corporate master to be engaged with the subject of his interview, the President of the United States. Interrupting the President when he is talking about Syria to complain that he's not talking about Syria is a new low for American journalism this side of FoxNews or right wing hate radio. It is truly one of those satire-is-dead moments. Todd's performance wasn't just bad -- it was absurd.
Of course, Todd will be back next week and the week after that and the week after that and so on. By keeping him on NBC will be demonstrating that it is part of the problem of corporate irresponsibility and anti-democratic bias.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)But if that were true, wouldn't you think they'd realize they could make more money by serving the "liberal" market instead of trying to compete for Fox News's viewers?
IMO, it's a company run by selfish bastards who want to lower their own tax rate. Screw the investors, and everyone else.
Jack Rabbit
(45,984 posts)Yes, they want to lower their own tax rate, too. The savings may then be invested in their corporation and the dividends are then taxed as capital gains at a lower rate than ordinary income.

(2,642 posts)1. That first quote in the graphic from Obama did not even happen. I have no idea where is came from, but the transcript and the video of the MTP episode has neither.
2. As soon as this segment was over, Todd clarifies his statement: "Some of you may have noted that I said the president hadn't mentioned the word "Syria" at all in one of my questions. He had mentioned it, but he hadn't said whether he was taking military action there."
3. According to the NBC transcript, President Obama mentioned Syria ONCE prior to Todd's comment, and not 10 seconds earlier. At the very start of the interview he says: "ISIL poses a broader threat because of its territorial ambitions in Iraq and Syria."

(14,047 posts)Yes, puke alert link, but if you want to know the RW meme that's going around:
<snip>
http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/chuck-todd-isis-isil-obama/2014/09/08/id/593263/
"Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd believes that President Barack Obama prefers to call the Islamic State terror group ISIL instead of ISIS because he doesn't want to deal with Syria.
During his interview with the president on the NBC show Sunday, Todd consistently referred to the jihad extremists as ISIS, an acronym for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, while Obama called the group ISIL, as in the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
The ISIS moniker has been adopted by most media outlets in most cases, including Newsmax. But Todd believes he knows the reason that the president is sticking to ISIL, Mediaite reported.
"Obviously, we refer to it at NBC News as ISIS," said Todd about the confusion surrounding the various names. "The Obama administration, the president says the word ISIL. The last 'S' stands for Syria. The last 'L,' they don't want to have stand for Syria."
</snip>
So apparently Todd went in with the notion that referring to the group as ISIL instead is ISIS meant that the President was avoiding using "Syria". As soon as "ISIL" was used, his brain went shut down and he completely missed the references to "Syria"
You have to go to a very perpendicular universe for that to make any sense, but that's where they live. You can Google "chuck todd syria" and all the right wing sites are focused on the use of ISIL instead of ISIS. Everybody else posting about Todd's inability to hear the word "Syria".
Oh, and the whole ISIS vs ISIL thing is bogus too: "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" is the correct translation per AP:

(2 posts)I watched the show in full. Right after the clip of that part of the interview was played, Chuck Todd got directly in front of the camera and noted his mistake in saying that the President did not mention Syria. He said that in fact the President had mentioned Syria.
So he immediately owned up to it, and corrected it.
Even though he was factually wrong in that statement, his obvious purpose was to get the President to elaborate on how Syria would fit in to whatever strategy he might be coming up with - something we all wanted to hear.
So what's with the crazy over-the-top vitriol? That's the kind of thing I would expect to read at a right-wing site. Democrats can be better than than that. We have genuine issues to be concerned with. Let it go.

(1,588 posts)This was Todd's very first show! This was so flagrant Todd could not ignore or deny the fact that he lied! Talk about disrespectful! Todd was so intentionally and so obviously uninvolved with what the President actually said! Todd proved he is not at all interested in even attempting to be fair or unbiased. Four times, FOUR TIMES the President mentioned Syria and Todd denied it.
You really think this was no big deal? If Todd tried to get away with this, what else has he done that is not that is not that obvious? Facts are not important to Chuck Todd. Remember Todd ACTUALLY said "It's Not Media's Job To Correct GOP's Falsehoods!" But lying about the President is not a problem!
Sorry, but I very much believe veracity and honesty in journalism is a "genuine issue". Todd should have apologized to both the President and the viewers!

And a lot has been written about who might be involved in our future. Were now happy to announce that Luke Russert will be an important part of our 24/7 identity and will become a regular contributor to MTP, not just on air on Sundays, but online Mondays through Saturdays as well.
Luke has an impressive love for politics and has proven himself on the Capitol Hill beat. Hell continue in his current role reporting for the network and MSNBC, but hell also branch out to take on new projects specifically for us...
We want Meet the Press to be a home for all of our colleagues who love politics every day of the week. Were excited about Lukes energy and creativity and look forward to the many talents hell add to the mix.
