(2,741 posts)to Cenk's appropriate praise of the system of education in Finland. My golfing friend and I were playing in Florida last winter. We are cooperative, not competitive. The two young Americans could not believe how we treated each other, congratulated each other, made suggestions about improvement, etc. "You guys don't know how to compete." What a nice compliment! I had the opportunity to meet a group of students from Finland. They were extremely friendly, not competitive at all. No, America has made education systems into profit making enterprises. Educating students? Unless it increases the ed czars bottom line, they could give a shit.

(28,979 posts)Growing up in the US, I have competitiveness built inside me and I hate it! It's something I am trying to lose because I think it's a very immature and un-attractive trait. Europeans and Canadians are so much more easy going and much more interesting to talk to. A lot less judgmental too. I will say that I feel like I have improved.

(50,983 posts)Even in the face of this strong evidence, education for profit advocates (neo-liberals) will not relent in their quest to destroy public education.
Finland's methodology is more effective, far more pleasant and less stressful on the students and teachers.
But it is not profitable, so fuck it!
