(71,611 posts)It's an absolute CERTAINTY that, when he attributes criticisms to "ENVY," he's beyond ever attaining any comprehension of the "average person's" perspective. I was "Class of '61" -- he was "Class of '65" -- within very few miles of one another, but separated by a huge chasm of affluence. I knew some who knew him ... and many in his "orbit" from being a caddy at his cronies' country clubs. He's beyond the pale.

(23,295 posts)in 1970 dollars, not 2012 dollars. Apartments were $150 a month in 1970. I don't care where you lived in the country in 1970, $600 a month was living in luxury. Penniless and destitute, indeed.

(12,471 posts)You could have rented a nice penthouse on Central Park West for $600!

(1,944 posts)it was the cost of flying to and from college that cost them the $600.

(34,406 posts)In 1970 I believe my husband earned about $7,000 on his police salary. That went for living arrangements and food for 4 kids, car upkeep and college tuition for my husband who was trying to get into law school eventually. I'd like Mrs Rmoney to top that!

$600/mo? They must have really been living high.

(58,349 posts)Hell, even my first apartments in Honolulu and NYC in the 90s weren't much more than that.
$600 for a basement apartment my ass - unless the architect was a moron and put the penthouse in the basement.

(253 posts)...two Bachelor's and two graduate degrees.
It's taken us 18 years to pay off two Bachelor's and three graduate degrees (wife has a Ph.D.--our last payment is in July).
I can't imagine what it would be like to try and do that while trying to buy a home and raise children. We're middle-aged and can finally start saving for retirement. Gee, that was fun!

(68,644 posts)that times are quite different now and and the road to "success" is less likely paved with student loans than it was in the past.
Kids, live for living, not for what anyone tells you needs to be done.
You're experts in your own experience, your teachers and advisers are NOT.
Beyond that distinction, k and frakkin r.

(169 posts)Since Mitt seems hell bent on moving the nation backwards to the days of the robber barons, he should move his 'little woman' back to the home(s) and keep her off the public stage. Everything she says gives further proof that they're not the "common people" they pretend to be.
Unless it's a leveraged buyout, just WHAT do THEY know about debt?

"You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They both dont alter their views to fit the facts. They alter facts to fit their views. Which can be very uncomfortable if youre one of the facts that needs altering."
Having been and known some of the facts who don't fit their views, I can tell you, it's very uncomfortable.
