Escobar: Al-Qaeda bogeyman gone, US bent on bugging China



The U.S. and the Philippines have staged a joint military exercise - storming an island in the South China Sea, near a marine area disputed with Beijng. America has been upping its armed presence in the Asia Pacific region, despite growing protests from China. Asia Times correspondent, Pepe Escobar, says that it's the latest attempt by Washington to provoke Beijing.

is oversimplifying this matter.

The US has a strategic interest in what goes on in Asia. Doesn't mean we have to fight wars over it, but it does mean that we should have a influence in the region. And we have allies there that we are bound to protect.
