TYT: Final Judgment: MSNBC Moving Away From "Left-Wing TV"

Cenk Uygur (http://www.facebook.com/cenkuyguroffi...) host of The Young Turks addresses the recent programming shift at MSNBC. A source at MSNBC said the goal of the changes was to "move away from left wing TV". Cenk has a unique opinion as someone who was once inside the MSNBC bubble. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

Cenk Uygur speaks the truth.

I wonder what Maddow will do. I remember her from Air America when she did criticize the dems for having no backbone. Maybe she will come back to her roots. But don't know where she could.

What would be wonderful is if all the news was actually news and not leaning anyway but to the truth. Like Al Jazeera America. Like the old CBS, Fred Friendly and Edward R Murrow. But that won't ever happen.

They're more interested in delivering the cohesive corporate message that their advertisers want than being a comprehensive balanced news dept. TV network and cable news entertainment shows are dying out as more people rely on the net for their information.

4. I have no problem with MSNBC runing hard news for a couple of hours in the afternoon

Who watches TV in the daytime? I'm sorry for Joy Reid, I liked her. But MSNBC still runs 6 hours of Democratic, left/Progressive TV from 5:00 pm through 11:00 pm; Ed Schultz, The Rev, Chris Matthews, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell. Now we can disagree as to how far center left to far left each host is, but the point is, it's at least a counterpoint to all the far right crap out there.

The worse thing they did was put Scarboro on in the morning. That was death to me.

But if we don't support the team from 5:00 - 11:00 pm, then we have no one to blame but ourselves if we lose MSNBC and the only left leaning commentators on broadcast/cable tv.

Top 3 stories of the day get covered over and over and then on Kornacki on the weekend. I'm sick of hearing about Guiliani. They give him legitimacy by showing the clips over and over.

very upset because we had NO left leaning media at all. Then KO came on and because of him MSNBC created the line up we see now between 5-11. If we let them get rid of the good ones or continue to censor them until they cannot say anything then who is left. The only one I can think of is Link. And they are mostly about documentaries. And the documentaries are often repeated over and over.

By the way is TYT on any news channel since Current was sold?

I would like to hear from KO on this.

Yes, I know many of you use the internet to get your news. Not everyone will or even can. Nor does pure news help us understand the events that are happening. When you say they are only commentators I disagree. They show us the events and have others tells what they have seen. And then they comment on the events. If you think that The old new reporters did not do that then you do not remember them.

If I had my way I would keep Ed Schultz, The Rev, Chris Hayes, Rachel and Lawrence O in prime time. I for one will follow others away from MSNBC if they think they are going to become nothing but milk toast.

5. This will be a ratings disaster for MSNBC

Everybody already has labeled them as left-wing TV, so no matter how much they change, Republicans and many centrists will still think of them as left-wing if they even have one centrist TV host and a bunch of far right hosts. MSNBC's problem is that a lot of their shows are just not entertaining - Rachel Maddow at least tries to inject some humor into her show. However, Ed Schultz - while I love his support for the unions and working class - is just not really cut out for TV; Al Sharpton is too polarizing a figure to draw in centrists; Chris Hayes is kind of dweebish and not really fun to watch; and Lawrence O'Donnell, while smart and fun at times, just is hard to watch in large doses.

Also, being shifting towards more right-wing programming is why CNN has been in such bad shape for years - Republicans didn't like that they didn't full-on attack Clinton and demand impeachment like that new network Fox News. CNN later went to leading Republicans like Newt Gingrich and asked why they were losing so many Republicans/conservatives and Newt and others told them to be more Republican... which they embraced. However, conservatives and Republicans still didn't trust CNN and liberals were now pissed off at CNN for its now right-wing slant and tuned out. It was a double whammy for CNN. LIberals tuned out of the mainstream news for several years, until they found Olbermann on MSNBC.

Get rid of Phil Griffin. They need someone with a backbone and who knows what liberalism actually is to run the network. No station that has Joe Scarborough on for so many hours every day can claim to be liberal. Replacing some commentary shows with straight news would be a great idea. Replacing the prison shows with straight news would be even better.

They got rid of some excellent hosts (Martin Bashir, Keith Olbermann) because of reichwing backlash or because Griffin didn't like them personally. People tuned in because of these people! They're gone for saying less than the BS that comes out of a usual hour on Fox.

Lastly, quit harping day after day on one subject until even the most loyal viewers are sick to death of it. Much as I love and trust Rachel, I got sick of all-BP-oil-spill-all-the-time. And, I'm sorry to admit, I did leave with all-Chris-Christie-GWB-Bridge-all-the-time.

MSNBC is not moving away from being "left wing TV." They never were left wing TV.

Watching MSNBC became frustratingly like one of the Dante's Inferno tortures -- always on the brink of progressive orgasm, but never quite achieving climax ... oop's we're out of time ... Many (Cenk, Thom Hartmann, etc.) have pointed out the too-numerous off-limits topics that never get covered (wouldn't want to annoy Comcast with net neutrality) ... Even Lawrence and Rachel have been brave enough to lament on-air about the "Je Suis" photo-cover restrictions ...

I think Olbermann saw it all coming ... probably why he got out early ...

Their call letters explains why. How anyone could ever think that major corporations like NBC (GE) and Microsoft would be anything but conservative asshole incorporated I'll never understand.

- I take that back, I think I do understand: ''People believe anything on the fucking teevee - without question.''
