(25,453 posts)One thing I always liked about Styx is that you had two distinct yet complimentary creative influences with Tommy and Dennis. And JY made his mark as well. Tommy had the more hard rock edged stuff like Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Too Much Time on My Hands and Dennis had the more pop and theatrical stuff like Come Sail Away, Best of Times, and Show Me the Way. The Kilroy was here/Mr. Roboto theatrical shows were admittedly a little ridiculous and certainly fodder to chuckle at a bit in retrospect, but it was a worthwhile experiment.
Queen was able to have multiple influences simultaneously and it never led to creative or ego differences that caused a split. But for some reason Tommy and Dennis just couldn't share.

(6,829 posts)In the 70's and eighties they became friends with Shirley Muldowney, three time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion and perhaps one of the only drag racers in history to be the subject of a feature length movie; Heart Like A Wheel.

Somewhere in all these pics is at least one of the band name on the cowl of her race car. (update - http://www.jamesyoung.ws/newsltrs/july1986.htm)
The movie was released around 1983 and it was mere months later that she had a terrible crash in Montreal. Those "long skinny cars that blow up all the time*" were still using children's bicycle tires at the time. Goodyear immediately developed a front tire more suited to the 250 mph speeds of the era.
The Shirley "movie car" was rescued from rotting on a movie back lot and I think it's now at Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida?

* as coined by family friend Lisa. Pretty much nutshells what these cars are all about from a lay perspective.
Found the pic I was looking for. Unfortunately, it's from the car that crashed in Montreal
