I signed. I also remember in Houston, TX, in the 70's when a young activist was sentenced to many years in prison for the same "crime." His actual crime was being Black. I remember Lee Otis.

This is so wrong and why was I not surprised that Mr. Noble is black.
Our country has so many problems to deal with but throwing upstanding citizens in jail for having a joint (or2) is not going to fix anything.
My heart goes out to Mr Noble and his family.
Unfortunately I have no faith that Piyush(Bobby) Jindal will see fit to pardon him.

safer for this? Is the community richer for this? Is it saving money for this? Where is the good in this? Where is the fucking good?

It is outrageous. It is the epitome of injustice. It is the state robbing someone of personal liberty for cynical political benefit of a group of politicians who gain from tough on crime rhetoric. This is unacceptable. We need to end this drug war now. We need to recast it, if there indeed a social cost to cannabis use (of which I'm in no way convinced there is) as a human services issue, not a penal issue.

We need to demand justice. DEMAND JUSTICE!

It's sad that grown men with every benefit in the world, who were able to get a great education and find well-paid employment choose to destroy others lives rather than make their community stronger.

Law is made to benefit man, man is not made to benefit the law. This law destroys 7 children's chances and makes them more prone to problems later in life, and DA Leon A. Cannizzarro knows this, or at least he should.

Cannizzarro is a disgrace to public service, a disgrace to Italians everywhere and a disgrace to New Orleans.

I hops karma kicks him right in his smarmy, draconian evil ASS.

Many, I am sure, will rejoice in his downfall.

What an evil, evil man Leon A. Cannizzarro is.

Leon A. Cannizzarro probably beats his wife and kids if he thinks sending a man to prison for 13 years for 2 joints is acceptable.

Someone should see if Leon A. Cannizzarro is getting kickbacks from for-profit prison corps; he seems like the type who is corrupt and evil enough to do just that.

Leon A. Cannizzarro is an incompetent DA who is costing his community a lot of money. 2 joints worth of pot cost about 10-30 bucks. It will cost hundreds of thousands to keep Bernard Noble in prison for 13 years.

Leon A. Cannizzarro is an evil-hearted person who hates black people.

Leon A. Cannizzarro probably abuses small animals and tortures his kids.

Leon A. Cannizzarro should be rotting in prison himself, because he has criminally, immorally and cruelly sentenced a man to never be with his kids until they are past grown. What an evil piece of scum Leon A. Cannizzarro is.

Leon A. Cannizzarro probably drinks like a fish and gets drunk and drives all the time. But he will sentence a man to 13 years in prison for having a less dangerous substance than alcohol? What a true PIG.

And finally, Leon A. Cannizzarro makes America suck so hard. He is what's wrong with America today. We destroy lives over trivialities. When we should be doing all we can to build up lives, Leon A. Cannizzarro destroys an entire family just for spite, greed and arrogance.

FUCK YOU Leon A. Cannizzarro

Like the prosecutor, the judge - the assholes who made and pushed these reprehensible laws.

But not the man serving 13 years for a couple of joints. He should be free. Now.

are doing lots of awful things, Sheriff Dart in charge of Cook County (Chicago is in Cook County) has been advocating for not sentencing non violent criminals to prison. He is pushing for ankle bracelets and rehab programs. The prisons here are overcrowded.

Actually, our newly elected right wing republican governor is looking into prison reform in IL:

Rauner says the panel will look for ways to reduce the rate of imprisonment by analyzing the entire criminal justice system, from the time someone is arrested to their release and re-entry into the community.

He says the current system is overcrowded, costly and ineffective, with too many people returning to prison. He says the state needs new ways to help ex-convicts become productive members of society.
