The only way to stop this is term limits but how long and if we do that then we do lose good ones like Kennedy who also would not have been able to stay as long as he did. Perhaps a good Democratic challenger might be best especially since Republicans will try to primary him out so we will have a weaker opponent but we must start now finding a good Democratic candidate.

I used to oppose term limits on the ground that it took more choice away from voters. In general, I was much more naive then. I am not sure I oppose them now. Whether the evils of lifelong "service" in Congress outweigh the benefits, I am not sure. Someone said when you can smell the marble (in the Capitol building), it's time to go. I think too many of them can smell the marble, but will never go voluntarily.

I, too, used to think of Kennedy whenever the subject of terms limites. However, he was a 1950s-60s liberal. I don't think we will see his like again.

Consider some hypotheticals. Let's say that though the official is elected by the people, he is more in contact with, and under the influence of, his major donors. And if he contests those donors, they will transfer their support to someone who will.

Maybe only a long term office holder can resist the onslaught of special interest challenges. IOW, the solution introduces some unintended complications.

And to do so based on a number is just another form of prejudice. I do think he has an anger problem, and has had it since his POW release if not before. That isn't age. I do think he has an odd proclivity for a certain female appearance. I generally disapprove of his politics, but occasionally I find myself agreeing with him. Like "Russia isn't a country it's a gas station."

Should he retire? Yes. Do I want to see other old people retire? No, not if they're vital and can do some good. That's key. Like Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Grassley, one of my 2 senators from Iowa (along with Ernst), turns 82 this September. He showed how capable he still was for the office by jogging somewhere. When he runs and wins in 2016 he'll be 83. So assuming he completes THAT term, he'll be 90 by the time the next crew is sworn in, January 2023. He'll probably still be senator then too.

John, the GOP will have plenty of grumpy old men even if you retire. Your time to lazily chew the cud on a green pasture has come--or even look forward to the great glue factory in the sky--just get the hell out of the Senate. You're a crazy hawk that would bomb a shit house in Samoa just for the fun of it. Enough! Yes, I know you were a prisoner of war in Viet Nam and I respect that--but that was a long time ago.

We shouldn't allow representatives to have anymore time than the president does to straighten things out. What I'm saying is, Representatives would have to actually work to accomplish anything. Now they don't care because they've pretty-much gerrymandered their way in. We can't have people with this kind of power, we see everyday what it does.
