Political Theater: Beethoven's Fidelio (with English subtitles)

This has everything. Drama. Political intrigue. A stunningly beautiful soprano and a diabolical villain who is a cross between Dick Cheney and Joe Arpaio.

And Fidelio is awesome, even though I sometimes find Beethoven a bit grating. (E.G., I much prefer his chamber works to his symphonies. I am much more a Bach and Mozart kind of person.)

But Fidelio is one of my faves. Unfortunately, one does not hear it often enough. And this performance is conducted by Doctor Demento himself, Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Heartily recommended.
