(14,255 posts)He (Jon) says that we have become so accustomed to politicians who are so scripted, so insincere, so unauthentic etc, that when we see someone like Bernie, honest, authentic etc. HE looks like the one who is strange.
Bernie was the only candidate he spoke well of. For that segment he received a huge round of applause.

(11,197 posts)is priceless to the Sanders campaign. I never cease to be amazed how The Daily Show can put so much into focus in such short segments.

(45,251 posts)At one point, Jon was snickering as he showed videos of Bernie speaking that had been doctored to include some critter or other running across the screen.
Really? The Daily Show had to manufacture a lame video in order to ridicule him?
Jon has been a mild gadfly to Democrats at times, but, overall, he has been faithful to the party line. The party line has been that Hillary shall be the nominee, and Jon has acted accordingly.
I give him all the props for being smart, funny, beyond talented, etc. But, independent and objective he has not been.

(38,613 posts)Jon was quite uncool about Sanders last time I saw him mentioned.
NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)and spot on in it's assessment. It almost seems as though Jon stopped just short of a full out endorsement of the Sanders campaign. Or did he (stop short)?

(8,352 posts)Authenticity versus staged optics.
Did Hillary Clinton literally speak in a feigned southern accent in South Carolina?
I was born and raised in the south, and I really hate when people not from the south try to ingratiate themselves by putting on a faux southern accent. I rarely trust that person after something that laughable occurs.
NorthCarolina

(45,251 posts)She once also equated being a Democratic Senator with a Republican majority with working on a plantation.
People who actually worked on plantations might beg to differ.
Reminded me of Clarence Thomas's comparing being questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States to a lynching.

(35,713 posts)That is a manufactured media incident--manufactured by the right. That part is taken out of context. If you watch what she said right before and after, you'll see what I mean.
I know because we studied it in a college class I was teaching at the time. The part I was teaching was mirroring (interpersonal communication). I have to go now, but I'll try to come back later and explain a little more.
Cher
I am a psychologist. That was not mirroring. That is called pandering...no matter what the context. She is not southern. I am sure my Scottish friend would love me to mirror his language by speaking to him a feigned Scottish accent.
NJCher
(35,713 posts)Until you've done so, you are unqualified to speak on the topic.
There's this thing called context.
On the internet, no one knows you're a dog....
Cher
I disagree with your position. I do not think the 'context' warrants such pandering.
Likewise....
I guess Sanders is somehow immune to that mirroring effect. Does that qualify as a Super power?
Or is it more likely that a polished politician with a horde of handlers and consultants would follow their advice to play up on similarities in order to create the impression of identification with the people they are speaking to?
I won't say that there isn't the possibility of some mirroring going on but I will suggest maybe that 'handling' is a more likely explanation than 'mirroring.'

(8,352 posts)You might match a persons posture, speed of speech, breathing, etc. Generally it is done one on one. Copying someone's accent is definitely not mirroring. To say so is to be hardcore into rationalizing a pandering behavior as ok.
Handling? Sure. Clinton is a classic pandering politician. She hopes that the low information vote will see the optics and not look at what's always underneath.

(7,723 posts)or talked like that the whole time.
I moved out of OK about 40 (+/-) years ago and people still can tell I have an accent...but I can detect a feigned accent either by Hollywood or politicians...
Sanders comes off as genuine.

(332 posts)Someone seems to be taking him seriously!
Sanders made his first official visit to Davenport, Iowa last night. They hoped for 200 people, the got over 500!
PS: We also had two Republicans in town:
Rand Paul showed up and got around 100.
Rick Santorum got around 50

(1,557 posts)They had to open up the rest of the room. And Bernie seemed really pleasantly surprised. He joked about spending his twenty-seventh wedding anniversary with half of Iowa.
I just hope they cleaned The Machine Shed really well after Santorum left.
