The Republican Party as a whole has a demographic problem. In the 2012 election, the only demographic that the party was able to secure by huge margins in the general election was older, white, male voters. African Americans, women, Hispanics, and voters under the age of 30 all flocked to the Democratic Party.

(10,650 posts)I agree, our candidate for president has an advantage, but the republicans will hold on to the house.
The low turnout elections are KILLING the Democrats. The republicans sweep the state legislatures and governorships. That's where they do their voter suppression and gerrymandering. They keep control of the US house.
The old, white, male demographic may be dying off for the repubs, but that's not enough to curtail republican power.

(2,367 posts)house races (yet).
But you're right about governorships and state legislatures - and even worse than the gerrymandering is that's where they do their real damage. In fact, most people (especially minorities and my fellow millennials) don't understand that state and local elections matter more than the presidential. The governor, state legislatures, and local government have far more of an effect on your life (believe me, I'm in WI) than the president and congress do.
I'm not sure the exact solution here, though I do have a feeling that once SCOTUS flips from 4-5 to 5-4 in our favor, a lot of the crap republicans are doing at the local and state level will die.
