Related: About this forumCongressman tongue lashed Paul Ryan for another silly Obamacare hearing
Published on Jun 12, 2015
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Congressman Paul Ryan had one of his unscheduled Obamacare bashing hearings this week. He continued to misinform with an opening speech that showed that the congressman and his ilk continue to put politics over the well-being of Americans.

(492 posts)and a hefty percentage of those people cluster around districts that elect mendacious clods like Ryan. The GOP has learned, over decades and decades of history, how to win against a majority. It knows that just enough Americans will vote completely against their own self-interest if they can be persuaded that the "other side" is soft on terrorism (used to be communism), in favor of socialism (used to be communism), wants to confiscate their guns (because that's what commie-socialists do), or sexually perverted (because of marriage equality).
In other words, the GOP plays the narrow-minded near-majority of Americans like a riverboat gambler, knowing exactly what to say, how to phrase it, when to say it, to win them over and, once won, keep them in thrall. Ryan wins because he knows his constituents will not participate in ACA provided health insurance -- even if it means they or their children will suffer without it -- because he tells them it's bad for America. And because he can't tell them constantly, every day, there's Fox News to keep them mis-informed and prevent them from drifting off into reality.
Many of these people (maybe most) believe, oh yes they do, in America as a red, white -- but mostly white -- and blue, Christian, military powerhouse where they can buy their beer, their guns, and their ammo, and where the (mostly white) police keep their neighborhoods safe by meting out the harshest physical treatment to the you-know-whos, whenever there is the slightest provocation (like aggressively walking, for example).
47%. A damning percentage, but's Ryan's America!

(12,545 posts)And with a compliant media that gives equal weight to fact and fiction, the Repubics have gamed the system. Between gerrymandering and voter suppression they managed to gain a majority of the seats in both houses despite more voters voting for Democrats.
Our system of government has been compromised by unscrupulous operatives aided and abetted by the most corrupt, immoral Supreme (Mediocre) Court in human History.
Maybe the only remedy at this point is pitchforks, torches and rope. A major reordering of priorities is required to avoid insurrection.

(86 posts)The only problem with ACA, is the involvement of insurance companies. They could fix that with eliminating them, and going to a universal health care. Instead, republicans want to place more emphasis on the what is wrong with the current system. Just more proof that republicans have no place in government, just as profiting off from the misfortune of others has no place in health care. When republicans see the poor, the sick, and the unfortunate, all that they can think of is how they can make themselves richer at the expense of others.
