Related: About this forumThom Hartmann: Bernie Sanders Could Be the Next FDR
For much of the 20th century - American presidents built on the policies of FDR's New Deal. That all changed with Reaganism in the 1980s. So which presidential candidate can bring about a new age of American progressivism?

(16,286 posts)better.
Whenever he talks about racial issues, climate change, etc., he can say that he and her are in agreement and that whichever candidate you choose, you simply cant choose a republican, something like that.
It would endear him to Hillary voters...and if that happened, well hell, it is all over but the shouting.

(16,286 posts)You see 99% of the public has NO clue what McCaskill did, as vile as it was, but they do know they sort of like Hillary
Think it thru
This isnt about you or me one upping the other, it is about getting Bernie elected.
When you appeal to people in a positive way, which is what he does, you encourage people to vote.
When you go negative you encourage them not to vote.
He could literally use her name to get elected while not selling out

(19,326 posts)to better understand your intent, which I might have surmised from your
Bernie 2016 images, but I try not to assume too much.
Actually, I like the way he handled it last night, before 10,000+ in Madison.
He never even mentioned Hillary, at all. I love that. And while reflecting on
that, I realized that Bernie really isn't even "running against" Hillary, he's
really running against Wall St, the MIC, not to mention BigPharma, the
medical insurance industry, the Koch Bros., et. al.
When I realized that, it made me even gladder than he didn't mention her.
But you have some good points on your approach too. Thanks for taking the
time to clarify.

(16,286 posts)to oppose Hillary, like many I run across seem to think of it.
It isnt about beating Hillary, to Bernie.
It is about doing something very radical, that has never been done before.
And it will include beating Hillary.
The Bernie supporters I want to identify with will put his winning as what matters, NOT her losing, and will do anything to help Bernie appeal to the wider audience.
There are many ways to do that, and what he has made perfectly clear is he will not go negative.
Sincere, genuine supporters like myself and yourself, will focus only on the positive and how to get his name on more lips than is now.
He will draw a very clear distinction between himself and all on the right, and when it comes to Wall street there will be an undeniable and clear distinction there as well with he and Hillary.
LIke Markos Moulitsas is saying right now on MakeItPlain on Sirius, we lucked out, we have two great candidates.

(14,255 posts)It would be a great idea - after Bernie wins the nomination, I will give you that. But before - that just helps Hillary.

(16,286 posts)MSM and the Hillary campaign, as just about any campaign would do other than Bernie.
Unfortunately that is the way ALL Campaigns go nowadays, other than Bernie.
When Bernie makes it clear that he not only wont go negative, but that he will complement her when he can, think about how HUNGRY the people are for that kind of campaign.
To me it is a no brainer. But I could be wrong
djean111
(14,255 posts)hey, even Bernie agrees with Hillary - and Hillary has a lot more money, so why not just switch support to Hillary right now - you are wrong.
If you think this would get Hillary supporters to switch to Bernie now - you are wrong.
And it is the Hillary supporters who are obsessed with that pledgey thing about Bernie's supporters swearing they will vote for HRC if she wins the nomination. So, no, I don't think that doing that would help Bernie at all.
There is no advantage to doing that except for Hillary.
Bernie is doing it right now, no need to change.

(5,069 posts)To mention Hillary is a distraction from his basic message - economic inequality - rinse, wash, repeat..............
Also, I don't think Bernie's campaign is traditional in style or substance. It's a given he won't get the msm coverage of his competitors. That is why we're all members of his internet army.

(534 posts)Bernie has said that this election is not about him and not about Hillary. It's about the issues.
I think he is wise to make it all about the issues. He has no desire to offend Clinton or her supporters.
In the minds of the voters, he is clearly onto something: it IS all about the issues this time.

(9,214 posts)Yeah that one always works. Why just the other day I was looking at a new Chevy and the salesman said "yep it's just as good as a Ford." Sure made me want to buy it!
Bernie is doing the right thing by attacking Wall Street and big banks, very few are happy with them and we all know who is associated with them.
Why would you have him change from a strategy that is already working so well? And why would you want to give Hillary free praise and advertising?

(15,480 posts)And how can he say he's in agreement with HRC on any issue? Bernie is about clearly stated and specific positions and proposals; she is avoiding unscreened questions on issues and/or purposefully vague. And then there's no telling in which direction she will "evolve" on any given issue.
I do agree it would endear him to "Hillary voters", and it would totally reinforce their commitment to her. During primaries, in case you haven't noticed, the whole point is to distinguish oneself from other candidates.
I expect that his powerful presentation of what a Sanders presidency would be like may be convincing a lot of tentative HRC supporters to switch to supporting him. We've seen several DUers state that already.

(5,927 posts)and this is not one of those times. Thank you Thom! The reason I know Bernie so well is because of your show over all these years. Did I say thank you? THANK YOU.

I think Bernie has a real chance to become POTUS,
(If the Republicans aren't able to flip enough votes to defeat him)
I wish all 50 states voted the same as Oregon does...100% absentee ballots.
Thanks for your great radio & TV programs
and also for your great website, which allows anyone to post their own Blog.
(I don't know of any other progressive talk show website that does that)

(41,132 posts)your many avid followers, and have learned so much about many subjects from you maybe more than my formal education. You have major followers in Seattle who are friends that I just spoke to about you and Bernie. Last year I saw you and Louise at Politics and Prose for your book talk, and we recently had a taxi driver who'd also heard of your 'Crash of 2016' book which prompted a long conversation about politics and your gifts, too many to mention here.
You're the best, and we're so fortunate to have Bernie, what a great American. Be well and peace.
Senator Bernie Sanders, the LONG DISTANCE RUNNER from youth and THE CANDIDATE 2016!

(26,624 posts)cuts to Wisconsin's education budget. I asked her if she heard Bernie Sanders said about Scott Walker when he was here in Wisconsin yesterday. I was surprised, she didn't know who I was talking about. I told her to look for the speech in Madison via you tube. I want to thank you for informing America about who Bernie is and what he stands for.
