In what is likely one of the most passionate speeches on the floor of the South Carolina Legislature, Republican State Representative Jenny Horne passionately and emphatically urged her colleagues to vote to remove the Confederate flag now. She did not mince words.

(10,893 posts)I have to give her props for that. She criticized and railed against the confederate flag, knowing that there are plenty of people in that deep-red state who still want to see the flag flown, and knowing that a faction of her party is not exactly known for being the most enlightened or tolerant in terms of race-relations. That took some backbone.

(16,180 posts)I suspect that the character of Sen. Pinckney helped forge some of this bravery. He seems to have won the respect of more than one of his Republican colleagues.
Her heart is alive and well. Good job.

(24,576 posts)I have a heritage. I am a life-long South Carolinian. I am a descendant of Jefferson Davis, OK? But that does not matter. Its not about Jenny Horne. Its about the people of South Carolina who have demanded that this symbol of hate come off the statehouse grounds.
I especially liked what she said here because the idea that someone's "heritage" trumps the pain caused by a symbol of hate is wide-spread among the flag supporters. I don't know how to reach the rubes with this message because so many appear to be totally self-centered and incapable of any feelings of empathy, but at least she was able to get the message to enough of her colleagues to carry the day.
I give her an A+ for nailing it.

(16,180 posts)"I cannot believe that we do not have the heart in this body ..." she said, pausing to swallow her sobs and raising her voice to shout, "to do something meaningful, such as take a symbol of hate off these grounds on Friday."
She thrust her finger at the floor with every word of her demand.
"And if any of you vote to amend, you are ensuring that this flag will fly beyond Friday. And for the widow of Sen. Pinckney and his two young daughters, that would be adding insult to injury, and I will not be a part of it."

(9,497 posts)I had to listen to it again today. When I think in terms of red v blue, I need to remind myself that there are good people across the aisle. And boy, didn't that sound like your mom when she had enough of your sh*t and wasn't having it anymore. She laid down the law!
