I am too old and too handicapped for most jobs. When the taxi industry is dead, so am I.

Taxi and truck drivers, GP doctors, are jobs that can already be done by machine.

. . . Unfortunately, these cabs will eventually mean a loss of jobs for thousands of cab drivers who work independently or for companies other than Uber. And I fail to see how these cabs would be all that much "greener" than a cab with a driver -- and any "green" benefit is more than offset by the social cost of the lost jobs..

Also, do passengers in these cabs have any choice as to the route they take? Here in NYC, if I tell a driver to take a particular route, that driver is required to take the route I specify. While this isn't something I use terribly frequently, it does come in handy now and then. I've lived here long enough to know that, in some cases, a GPS-calculated route is not necessarily the most efficient way to get from point A to point B.
