But I respect him for trying. and then Reagan made a deal with Iran to keep the hostages until Carter's term ended.

He wasn't lucky with pursuing detente with the USSR because they invaded Afghanistan.

He wasn't lucky with energy policy because the Oil Embargo occurred during his presidency. And the oil shock caused a recession. He tried to get America to become more energy efficient, and energy use was significantly reduced for a while. Ronald Regan removed the solar panels Carter had put on the WH roof and encouraged Americans to live like it was 1950 again.

None of these were Carter's fault, but the right wing used them to get Reagan into office and portray Carter as a loser and a weak president.
