The word, IMO, is used to diminish.

very untoward happening to the candidate. I expect you'd have said the US would never have elected a Catholic President.

If you want to make God laugh, tell people what's going to happen or not happen tomorrow. Pardon my minor adaptation of the old saying.

People who understand that socialism is a form of helping people, and that it has never been implemented on the planet will realize that socialism is actually a good thing.
Those uninformed who believe that the USSR was a socialist state, do not understand socialism. The USSR was a dictatorship with state-owned capitalism. The profits and decisions on what was done with state-owned enterprises were still run by a small cadre of people, as it typically does in every capitalist system.
In a socialist system, the workers, who get less for their work than whatever they produce, be it goods or services, in any capitalist system, have a say in every aspect of the workplace, and enterprise. These same workers also share in the profits of the enterprise.

For a better understanding, please log in to http://www.democracyatwork.info for much more info than I can put here. A specific podcast there will explain the difference between capitalism and socialism. It is the "Get the latest" section > Economic Update Radio Show. Then listen to the July 6 show, entitled "Class and Socialism."
It will give a much better explanation than I could ever give.
