President Jimmy Carter: The United States is an Oligarchy.

"Thom Hartmann talks with President Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States (1977 to 1981) / Humanitarian / Awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 / Author of many books, including his latest, A Full Life."

But I guess that the TPP fans will throw President Carter under the bus too.

Former President Carter, a longtime Sunday school teacher, is walking away from the Southern Baptists because of the church’s stance on equality for women.

In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published today, Carter says Southern Baptist leaders reading the Bible out of context led to the adoption of increasingly “rigid” views.

“I’m familiar with the verses they have quoted about wives being subjugated to their husbands,” he told the paper. “In my opinion, this is a distortion of the meaning of Scripture. … I personally feel the Bible says all people are equal in the eyes of God. I personally feel that women should play an absolutely equal role in service of Christ in the church.”

Southern Baptists are the United States’ largest Protestant denomination, with 15.9 million members.

Just a word to those in the neoliberal camp contemplating doing just that . . .

Just because the authorities allow elections doesn't mean it's a democracy,
especially if they're the ones doing the all the nominating
Just because because your people win and enact a raise the minimum wage and a ban on fracking
doesn't make it a democracy, especially not when the authorities can
appeal to a panel of unelected corporate shysters and order taxpayers to cough up
fines payable to injured corporations for unrealized "expected" profits

and since I don't get the paper I did not have a heads up on it, and the local TV media said zilch about it. I read in Sunday's paper that over 1,000 people (!) lined up to have him sign and shake his hand. He also had people with special needs come to the start of the line. Bless that man!!!

great pressure or stress and there's no room for lies.

On Edit:

Of course it can also be argued that Jimmy takes the virtuous elements of his faith seriously and it's not just for show.

Probably a combination of the two.

But, that is a clever post.

Here's the thing: on my very first political message board, circa 2005, I posted something like, "Maybe Carter was not a rocket scientist, but he was far from stupid." Whereupon, a fellow Democrat corrected me with the nuclear submarine info.

America is an imperfect democracy but not among those other ones. Jimmy Carter ought to show some respect for the country he once led instead of attention mongering.
