(40,416 posts)The Moon is tidally locked to the earth, meaning that it only ever presents the same face towards the Earth. The other side is not dark, but is only always facing away from the Earth. But that does not mean that the Moon always presents one face to the Sun. In fact, as one can clearly see in the Lunar phases, the Moon experiences day and night just like the Earth, including the far side. Because of tidal locking, the Moon's day is the same as its period of revolution around the Earth, about 28 days. So the far side experiences a day/night cycle. There is no dark side.
I don't know where the "dark side" meme got started, but it is clearly wrong.
