Much more similar in those respects than Mars.* At one time, Venus had flowing water. Now its average surface temperature is over 800 degrees F--hotter than Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. Why? Because of a runaway greenhouse effect that continues to this day.

It's an enormous, next-door, planet-sized warning about the dangers of the greenhouse effect and global warming. Yet millions of Americans listen to Rush Limbaugh's rubbish and accept it as gospel. Heaven help us.

And, obviously, this occurred without human agency. The takeaway here is that the climate of planets can change drastically, sometimes irreversibly, and those changes can be the result of physics, geology, or the actions of living organisms.
