(3,688 posts)Mars Climate; or any Planets teaches us valuable lessons of our Climate and Atmosphere. The discoveries to be made by Planetary Science are Enormous. What a Buffoon.
Old Crow
(2,212 posts)... particularly the point regarding the value of planetary science. As you probably know, Earth's twin planet is not Mars, but Venus, which has roughly the same size, composition, and mass. Much more similar in those respects than Mars.* At one time, Venus had flowing water. Now its average surface temperature is over 800 degrees F--hotter than Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. Why? Because of a runaway greenhouse effect that continues to this day.
It's an enormous, next-door, planet-sized warning about the dangers of the greenhouse effect and global warming. Yet millions of Americans listen to Rush Limbaugh's rubbish and accept it as gospel. Heaven help us.

*For the curious, here's a comparison of Earth, Venus, and Mars in respect to diameter, density, distance from the Sun, and surface gravity.
Diameter (in kilometers)
Earth: 12,742
Venus: 12,104
Mars: 6,779
Density (grams/cubic cm)
Earth: 5.515
Venus: 5.243
Mars: 3.933
Distance from the Sun (semi-major axis in A.U.)
Earth: 1.000
Venus: 0.723
Mars: 1.524
Surface Gravity (relative to Earth)
Earth: 1.000
Venus: 0.905
Mars: 0.379

Old Crow
(2,212 posts)And, obviously, this occurred without human agency. The takeaway here is that the climate of planets can change drastically, sometimes irreversibly, and those changes can be the result of physics, geology, or the actions of living organisms. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any follow-up questions if you like and I'll do my best to address them. I'm not a scientist, but I've followed the science now for about two decades.

(728 posts)Limbaugh just said that NASA made up flowing water on Mars to advance a liberal agenda??? Now that is some right-wing paranoia!
Old Crow
(2,212 posts)It's gotten to the point that all scientists, in the view of many conservatives, are clearly part of a liberal plot. Heck, maybe even science itself is in on it.
If only the conservative right-wing could come up with a form of government that rejects science and returns society to a faith-based model. Lessee... surely Wikipedia has some suggestions for something like that.... What's this? Sharia Law? Waitaminnit!
