All Dalton Trumbo ever wanted was his name on an Academy Award, and the same goes for the people whove been entrusted with telling his life story, begins Adam Nayman, writing for Cinema Scope. This is not to impugn Bryan Cranston or the other crackerjack actors cast as (in)famous faces from Hollywoods pastchances are that Otto Preminger would have signed off on Christian Berkels campily imperious impersonation, which suggests that the director was actually Mr. Freeze in real life. But John McNamaras pandering hand job of a screenplay uses the broadest strokes possible to dramatize the blacklist era, in essence undermining Trumbos own (directly quoted) contention that there were no heroes or villainsat which point director Jay Roach cuts to a demonically goateed Edward G. Robinson (Michael Stuhlbarg) sitting forlornly in the audience of a gala tribute to the Great Man.
If theres one subject that Hollywood finds infinitely fascinating, its Hollywood, writes Henry Barnes in the Guardian. In the past five years, three of the best picture Oscars have gone to films about how the industry sees itself: as a place of heroism (Argo), integrity (Birdman) and nostalgia (The Artist). Rarely do two of these qualities have much bearing on what movies get made. But Trumbo is a rare thing: a film that calls Hollywood on its crap, while ladling on a little bit more in the form of misty-eyed romanticism.
Noting that Trumbo stood up to Congress, went to jail, and then went on to write films like Roman Holiday, Spartacus and Lonely Are the Brave, the Hollywood Reporters Jordan Mintzer finds that this this rather hastily made period piece is boosted by a few welcome stabs at humor, most notably from sidemen Louis C.K. and John Goodman, playing two industry members who saw Trumbo through the worst years of the Red Scare. Otherwise, the film can be far from subtle at times and tends to wear its righteous politics on its sleeve, making it more of an elevated TV dramedy than a work on par with Trumbos best efforts. But how many movies today are?

(84,711 posts)John Wayne was a committed conservative Republican, a role he was keen to discuss in public and play in his films. From his portrayals of the rugged individual in his westerns to the American commie-fighting hero in war films, Wayne acted on film what he idealized in real life.
His political views stemmed from his patriotic fervor:
Sure I wave the American flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. Im not ashamed of that, never have been, never will be.10
He was attracted to the rugged individualism of nineteenth century Americaa country where opportunity abounded if you were willing to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.11 But his was not a worldview that included food stamps and social security:
When anti-commie fever broke out after World War II, Wayne jumped right on the bandwagon. He was a founding member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals13 and also, for a time, a member of the controversial John Birch society.14 His fervent hatred of all things communist also led him to support the Vietnam Warwhich didnt win him any friends in Hollywood.15
Not surprisingly, he was and is a favorite of the Republican party. He spoke at the Republican National Convention in 1968 during Nixons first successful bid for the presidency.16 And Republicans are still talking about him as the ideal representation of their party.1718
