Papantonio: Why Is The Media Silent About The Corporate Takeover Of The Judiciary?

When the Supreme Court gave us the Citizens United decision, we knew that our democracy was about to be handed over to corporations. But what few people understood was that it wasn’t just politicians that would be bought – corporate interests are also buying up our judiciary.

Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio discusses this with attorney David Haynes.

The Texas Supreme Court rules against individuals and in favor of corporations 94% of the time. If you get a decent sized verdict in Texas state court, the corporation and their attorney knows they can wipe it out if they appeal. We had a case where a life insurance company wrongfully denied payment of benefits and fought the case for 8 years. The jury found for the plaintiff and awarded 1.2 million plus 8 years of pre-judgment interest. The parties mediated to avoid an appeal and the top offer from the insurance company was $15,000. Their attorney was the biggest fundraiser for the justices of the Texas Supreme Court. We were not surprised when the case was sent back down and a new trial ordered over a made up excuse. Think the defense attorney knew something when he only offered $15,000?

Most people do not know who the candidates for judge are when they go to vote. Many see a name that sounds a little familiar and vote for them because they don't even recognize the other name(s). If a judge is given money to run ads he will most likely win due to name recognition. $30,000 is yuuuge for a judicial race and chicken feed for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Koch Bros., and the like. The Chamber started doing this in state and local elections during Reagan's time, so they have sewn a lot of seeds since then. Justice is more for sale than ever! This is why we need Bernie Sanders and the Publicly Funded Elections that he is for!!!!!
