I've just about quit trying to give a few of my acquaintances the real facts. They-just-can't-process-the information. We know that we don't know everything. (damn it!)

Look it up. Ignorant people do not have the capacity to know their ignorance.
Also, check out Altemeyer's authoritarian personality, which was covered admirably by John Dean in "Conservatives Without Conscience".
Those two are a deadly combination.
