(7,395 posts)Nothing anybody but the blockheads will fall for, though.
I count myself immune to the Fearful Tales Of Power Denied.
For instance, Battlefield Earth. Now if we're talking Dr. Who or the Wizard Of Oz -- but no, no hierarchy of bitter old hypersexualized Nazis in those.
Ah, if only the Gnostic Gospels had been left in. Some good ideas in there. Bad for the Church, good for the people, so -- they chucked it.

(18,998 posts)And those most religious have read the least of it.
And even if they do read it, it is with the belief that every word of it is a commandment from god...and most of it is history being told not proclamations.
Those passages read were laws passed by despotic leaders thousands of years ago, and are passed off as commandments from god...oddly enough by both religious fundamentalist and atheist.

(915 posts)what I understand is that the muslims that go to become more devout seem to become more radicalized and believe that slaughtering innocent people is the route to their personal salvation. I don't believe the Bible teaches that.
Also, the 10 Commandments, though rarely followed by the hypocrites on the Christian right, nevertheless are a clear articulation of what Christianity teaches at its core.

(1,832 posts)I have mostly studied my own country, where until 1866 the Danish Criminal Law was copied directly from The Ten Commandments, and the punishments from The Old Testament too, including the chopping of hands etc. It is a bit milder today, but that is still our foundation for law. In modern time the proposed laws of killing gays etc in Uganda is also directly based on quotes from the Bible, partly provided by US missionaries.
Since Christianity and the Bible has been the cultural basis for 1000+ years in our part of the world, it will continue to be a very heavy burden on all our thinking. And yes, the mass killings Christians has done through time was supported by priests and quotes from the Bible. In USA a big influence for all foreign policy is still very obviously Christianity - like GWB's crusade speech etc...

(13,877 posts)Of course, they killed him. But personally I don't believe the Old Testament should be included in the Bible...for any reason. And most Christians just pick and choose what they like and pretend the rest doesn't exist. Thus, the only current "hot" Old Testament banner, is the LGBT "curse".
Read the Beatitudes...and the Golden Rule...that was the New Law/New Testament/Jesus. Unfortunately, most Christians fail miserably.
I don't think the Koran has had such an update???

(54,387 posts)But the tone of the people's reactions is so very typical of the Netherlands. It's not easy to explain, and the only reason I speak Dutch is because I live near there, have an office there, and am there once a week for work, and would feel like an idiot if I hadn't learned the language of a place where I spend so much time.
By the way, not all people in the Netherlands are so open minded. My best Dutch friend and I were on a train from Germany to the Netherlands last year, and we were remarking on the lousy weather, and one of us said the Dutch equivalent of "God-DAYYAM!" An elderly Dutch couple sitting in front of us turned around and started yelling at us why we weren't allowed to say such things, and demanded we "think of Jesus!" before we ever opened out mouths again.
