Why Are Blue States Turning Red?

When you look at red states in America, one must wonder why they aren’t voting for the left. Many poor areas vote for politicians who want to slash the safety net. Wins by anti-government assistance politicians like Matt Bevin from Kentucky and Paul LePage from Maine are just two examples of voters that depend on the safety-net programs voting in some cases against their own interests.

Reporter Alec MacGillis discusses his New York Times article, "Who Turned My Blue State Red?" with Ring of Fire’s Sam Seder.

I think that the decline of industry and the labor unions within those industries has a lot to do with it.

Back when Idaho had a large mining sector, it could send Dems like Frank Church to the US Senate. Now that coal is shrinking, Democrats are losing support in West Virginia and Kentucky.
