TYT: Deal Reached In Paris Climate Talks

We had climate talks in Paris, which have now reached a conclusion. We have a deal. Is it a good deal? It depends who you ask… Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"After two weeks of tense talks, word-wrangling and marathon overnight meetings, diplomats in Paris agreed to a global climate change accord on Saturday evening -- a day after the summit's scheduled conclusion.

Leaders and experts cheered the historic agreement that emerged from the 21st Conference of the Parties, or COP21, calling it ambitious and realistic, and a crucial step in protecting the Earth for future generations.

"The decisive deal for the planet is here," French President François Hollande told delegates Saturday morning, shortly before releasing the final draft. Outside, thousands of protesters had begun filling Paris streets in an appeal for a strong climate pact.”*

over Cenk's optimism.

The evidence is accumulating that the climate scientists had underestimated the gravity of the situation. The fact that the rest of the world (190+) countries would not have agreed is not a valid argument. Many of those 190+ countries, those in the global south especially, did not cause the problem and have the most to lose with the consequences of climate change (draught, famine, flooding, migration, etc., etc.) The US, along with the industrialized world in the global north, bears the responsibility for the historic accumulation of greenhouse gases. The US is the world's largest economy and has the ability to apply diplomatic pressure. Furthermore, the US which is one of the countries contributing the most C02 has the most to contribute to reduction by changing its behavior. It's more than time for the US to show political and moral leadership on this issue. It's also overdue for the elected leaders of this country to show some political will to address this problem. The longer decisions are postponed the fewer decisions will be available.
