They embrace democratic (little d) principles* less and less as time goes by and must resort to illegal and unethical methods more and more to get their ilk in office. If they did not have such a large control of the media, no conservative would currently be electable.

* Obvious example: they don't want to count votes to see who to install in office.

They are gone. What remains is a deeply radical, reactionary party with absolutely no conservatism left. They are basically a revolutionary party, willing to destroy the existing structure to establish something entirely new, something THEY want which doesn't (and never has) existed in this country. "Republican conservative" is an oxymoron.
