President Obama designated three new national monuments in the California desert Thursday, expanding federal protection to 1.8 million acres of landscapes that have retained their natural beauty despite decades of heavy mining, cattle ranching and off-roading.
The designation was requested by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who for a decade has sought to protect land that wasn't included in the 1994 California Desert Protection Act. That measure covered nearly 7.6 million acres, elevated Death Valley and Joshua Tree to national park status and created the Mojave National Preserve.
Unable to gain momentum on her California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act last year, Feinstein and conservation groups asked Obama to act unilaterally to create the three monuments overlapping biological zones between roughly Palm Springs and the Nevada border. .....

Wednesday was a busy day for people who threaten violence against federal officials over public lands. As law enforcement officers surrounded the remaining occupiers at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, the man who started it all — Cliven Bundy — was arrested in Portland.
Now, Cliven Bundy didn’t physically start the now-infamous takeover of the Malheur refuge by an armed militia — that was his son, Ammon. But he did inspire the movement that led to the occupation. Bundy did that by forming a militia of his own — a much bigger, scarier militia that engaged in a stand-off with federal officials in 2014 ............

Does that asshole mean other than the fact that these idiots were armed with lots of guns which they flagrantly displayed and that they talked incessantly about armed confrontation with federal authorities on social media? Does the douche bag lawyer mean other than that?

But good luck with that argument before the judge or jury, Mr. Douche Lawyer. I am sure they will be receptive. In fact, I recommend that you go with that defense, so we can be more sure that your clients receive their justly deserved maximum penalty.

... Despite spending almost nothing on his campaign, and having an active warrant for his arrest at the Las Vegas City Marshal’s Office for traffic offenses, Moore surfed a Republican wave Nov. 4 and narrowly defeated extremely well-funded incumbent Democrat Jason Frierson.
In fact, it appears the $792 warrant after pleading no contest for having no proof of insurance is only slightly less than Moore raised during his campaign.
Although it’s not the first time he has made the police blotter, Moore’s legal entanglement is no major scandal ... he’ll show he’s in over his head like most of his fellow freshman legislators. ....
