they are not destroying our species. What is destroying our species (and tragically many other species as well)
is the overreach of modern technology in the hands of corporatists who are more concerned with profits than people.

Substitute the word "God" for "witch" and the problem is exponentially larger than this would lead people to believe.

The human species MUST free itself from dogmatic, organized religions of all stripes or it cannot move forward beyond the current state of affairs. Whether you profess Allah, Jehovah, Yahweh (which is also Jeebus and his Casper the Ghost spirit buddy for the cultish idiots in X-tianity that do not recognize the fact that they are in fact tri-theists and not in the monotheism club), Zeus, Vishnu, Ra, Thor, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Aphrodite or Osiris you are simply wrong.

The abuse of children, and especially women and girls throughout time, is a massive stain on humanity. The OP example comes with pictures and a horrible tale, but I feel the worst for the millions suffering similar fates around the world today and the billions who have suffered from religion in general over the lifespan of the human species.

Maybe we can't do better. Maybe the portion of our destiny that is nature over nurture is too pervasive, too susceptible to suggestion and leaves us too weak to face the abyss without a security blanket...maybe.

But I believe that a world without religion would be a superior place, and not just for humans.
Those villagers who stood by and watched as a human child struggled to "survive" in their midst? I hope a very nasty virus emerges into their land and burns through them all like a grass fire on the plains. Their kind of thinking and contribution to the gene pool is no longer required.

... religion is the greatest fomenter of hatred and intolerance in the history of humanity. Or words to that effect.

As soon as our proto-human ancestors began to communicate verbally, the slimiest little weasel in the cave said to the biggest bully in the cave, "Listen, you be the government, and I'll be the religion, and we'll have these idiots by the short curlies for the rest of eternity!" No one knows what the Neanderthal translation is for "short curlies," but you get the idea.

Unspeakably evil people have exploited the fear and ignorance of those desperate to BELIEVE in some magical, all-knowing entity that allows them to absolve themselves of any responsibility for their actions. "God spoke to me!" Or my all time favorite, courtesy of the inimitable Flip Wilson, "The DEVIL made me do it!"

There are many true believers who are sincere in their desire to do good, but there are far, far too many who coerce those who have misplaced their trust to actually drink the Kool Aid, as that malevolent monster, Jim Jones did to his doomed followers.

The thousands of televangelists who prey on those who pray, exhorting the faithful to send their rent money to them so they can buy the bigger jet that God wants them to have, are the embodiment of pure, undiluted evil; the Antichrist personified. Their victims are beyond the reach of reason, but are all too willing to do violence to whomever their fraudulent pastor singles out for retribution, as is the case with the poor children in the video. Making their victims complicit in their crimes assures them of a following.

These monsters must be stopped.
