a pretty difficult time growing up in post war Germany. Sang it when times were rough and I could not complain. Thanks for the reminder.

And I knew the man for more than 30 years.
It fits him, and I will now have to learn it.

Well, you know, I believe that Pete would have endorsed Bernie wholeheartedly, as would his wife Toshi. They are no longer with us, and I miss them like family. Heck, they were my second family.

Helluva man. I hadn't heard this song either. One of my favorite Seeger songs was Viva La Quince Brigada. When my children were little we would all sing that song in the car. They were too young to understand the lyrics but they sure liked Pete singing and playing.

at a Memorial we had in Pete's home town of Beacon.
What a prolific songwriter. He was always writing songs.
He even wrote a rap song!
Pete's favorite audience was the little kids. Shortly after he was black listed, his wife, Toshi suggested that he sing at the summer camps near their home in Beacon. He sang at those camps for a couple of decades.
I was in tears when I saw him sing This Land Is Your Land at Obama's inaugural. I even remember commenting about the hat that he was wearing. I miss my adopted parents. I adopted them, along with a lot of us here in the Hudson Valley. We all consider ourselves Pete and Toshi's kids. I am sure that there are many more all over the planet.

Pete would sing This Land Is Your Land all the time.
You do know that Pete and Woody Guthrie were best friends.
On Woody's death bed, Pete PROMISED Woody that he would never leave out the two most important verses of that song.
They go like this:

There was a high wall there that tried to stop me
There was a sign there, said "private property"
But on the other side it didn't say nothing
This land was made for you and me

In the streets of the city, in the shadow of the steeple,
By the relief office I seen my people;
They stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Every time I have heard Pete sing the song, he has never left these verses out.
Some versions of lyrics may not include them, or they may have them erroneously.
The words that I have wrote, are THE words.
I know that because I have been singing them for many years.
Many times with Pete.

Yes I did know Pete & Woody were best friends. I knew about the lyrics but did not know there was a promise. Pete was a man of integrity so I'm not surprised.

From his early days with The Weavers, through the McCarthy horrors and on through the years until he left us. He and Toshi would absolutely be for Bernie.
