If the ordinary citizen (who otherwise wouldn't be a low information voter) has enough time away from struggling to make a living and raising kids, to pay attention to politics, this is a no-brainer. Retired and active in local Democratic politics myself, I'm amazed at the number of working moms I know who don't know what's going on politically.

People are saying that the rise of Trump is due to the Republican party debasing itself as in the following thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027692823

The Republican Party has debased itself for decades – courting racists, placating religious lunatics, and using the culture wars as a political wedge. Candidates like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin are natural outgrowths of this conservative ecosystem; they’re exactly what you’d expect it to produce.

This is no doubt true. However, the recession that all except the 1% have experienced in the past 15 years is also a major contributing factor to the rise of Trump. And the recession was caused by the bi-partisan deregulation that has been going on for a couple of decades. So the Third Way/DLC wing has had a hand in the rise of Trump as well.

Will Rogers explained the problem with trickle down way back in 1932: "The money was all appropriated for the top in the hopes that it would trickle down to the needy. Mr. Hoover was an engineer. He knew that water trickled down. Put it uphill and let it go and it will reach the dryest little spot. But he dident know that money trickled up. Give it to the people at the bottom and the people at the top will have it before night anyhow. But it will at least have passed through the poor fellow’s hands."
