KANSAS CITY, MO, March 24, 2016
Author and Kansas City native son Thomas Frank returned to his hometown to talk about what's wrong with the Democratic Party in support of his new book 'Listen, Liberal'.
Following on the tradition of his popular book 'What's the Matter with Kansas' which carefully chronicled how the Republican Party of Lincoln has been seduced and deliberately taken over by extremist ideologues of the far right, Frank now makes the case that the DEMOCRATIC PARTY has also been taken over by a type of CONSERVATIVE ideology that, while not promoting ECONOMIC INEQUALITY, certainly rationalizes it.
While Republican "establishment" figures revere the accumulation of wealth as a sign of 'winning' which somehow makes them automatically somehow qualified --or entitled-- to govern, The Democratic "ESTABLISHMENT" believes that the world is a 'meritocracy' where the elites of the 'professional class' are best suited to govern based on their superior educational attainment and connections.
Frank asserts that the two political parties dominated by societal ELITES have systemically failed the WORKERS in America, resulting in a space for POPULISM to naturally grow into.
The Democratic Party under the leadership of President Bill Clinton turned its back on its working class and middle class roots while attempting to expand and capture the professional class. Claiming that 'they have no place else to go,' the Democrats have also been responsible for policies that increased INCOME INEQUALITY and increased the economic insecurity of white working class people. Some of these people have found a new place to go. They have now left the building. Many of them can now be seen following a pied piper named Trump.
The broken two party political system that has largely seen the hereditary moneyed elites-- who thought they could control the working class with a mix of social conservatism, phony fiscal fears and tax voodoo, and foreign fear mongering-- fight with the intellectual professional class elites who thought they could control the working class because 'THEY HAVE NO PLACE ELSE TO GO', is giving way to an authoritarian populism embodied by a narcissistic reality TV caricature of success likely to be the next Republican Presidential nominee.

(5,621 posts)I didn't read it, but he talked about it on Thom Hartmann. And, when I can read it I will. You will totally understand why some Democrats support Bernie and why some Democrats support Hillary. It is quite the history of the Democratic party.

(7,321 posts)Holy Mackerel! That headline alone needs it's own OP.!
We owe her a debt of gratitude for unwittingly disrupting Bill Clinton's plans to privatize Social Security, he and Newt Gingrich cooked up behind closed doors. The scandal broke just in the nick of time. pennies from heaven?
Of course, Bill Clinton is still on that mission, caught on tape with Paul Ryan on just how they could work together to accomplish that. But hey, Hillary supporters don't give a damn about Social Security being privatized, they got theirs..

Yes it was disgusting. and quite revealing. I think it should be posted again as a reminder of just what we have to look forward to among other atrocities.

(41,182 posts)the home of unions, social security and medicare, the working class and middle classes. Thom Hartmann asks journalist Tommy Frank how the Democratic Party of FDR, Henry Wallace and Lyndon Johnson became the party of Bill Clinton, Tim Geithner and Larry Summers, and much more. Great session, 57 mins.

(23,867 posts)It took me years to understand the details. I didn't know what NAFTA was when it came out. I knew it was a scam, but didn't know the philosophy until now. He does a great job of revealing those facets
I watched it happen. I knew what was going on. I didn't know the details and the philosophy until now. I finally get the whole picture.
It's a great time for information and learning. I'm sorry I didn't have the interest in discovering the truth about the shift some Democrats were making. And that's how they got away with it.

(41,182 posts)has been both infuriating and liberating. Much credit and appreciation to Tommy Frank and other political analysts who've educated us about the conservative movement directed by elites within the Democratic Party in the last 25 years. It has to change now in the other direction, the country must make a hard left for the sake of humanity and life on earth.
Sanders is center left, and Clinton is far right in this graph comparison with UK political parties as one example. Amazing.

(7,321 posts)and was faced with the on the street reality of it.
When Bill Clinton won the election, I remember saying to friends and peers, that we were coming out of a "shell shocked" era.. and maybe, that euphemism was more accurate than I had imagined then.
So in effect, I was so incredibly relieved that a Democrat finally won the election, I had no clue what he was about, but what did that matter?. I just figured, he was a Democrat, Hall-a-friggin-Lulla! everything was going to come up roses finally after 12 years of Reagan and Poppy Bush.
But then in that second term, he was enacting really weird anti-Democratic Party policies. WTF? Reading Utne articles explaining his policies, rooted in "Third Way" think tank institutes and white papers, explaining the "New Democrat" I still didn't get it. Until much later. When the effects of these policies began to reveal itself.
The Clinton's Hijacked the Party when he took office the 92 election. But it wasn't until 2000 when I began to recognize it.
