Pharma profits do explain drug price increases. Pharma does this because they can. "Pharma bro" Martin Shkreli is exhibit #1.
I have to take a particular medicine to stay alive. It is not insulin. I take the generic form. The drug has been in use for this problem since before 1960. No fundamental changes have been made to the basic formulation since then. The price quadrupled between November 2014 and January 2016.
When I called the insurance company to ask why my costs had increased they said it was due to increase cost of source materials. I asked which source materials. They wouldn't say. I asked if they would send me a letter indicating why the price keeps increasing. They won't do it. My MDs and pharmacists are shocked by this increase and have no explanation why it is occurring.
At the end of this video, some random MD is quoted as saying the price increase in insulin MAY be because of better formulations. Baloney. Don't fall for vague excuses. Pharma increases the price because they can. Killing people who can't afford it isn't their problem.
