If you've clicked this post, you probably already know that electronic voting machines are a disastrously bad idea. (If you don't, I encourage you to visit this recent post.) What you may be wondering is, How did we ever become so dependent on them, and so quickly?
In the segment below, taken from a "Dan Rather Reports" episode back in 2007, Rather suggests a disturbing possibility. It appears that in order to get America to rush headlong into electronic voting, the Florida "Hanging Chads" fiasco was deliberately created.

(2,212 posts)I'm not sure what you mean by "the USSC appointed one." HAVA (the Help Americans Vote Act) was certainly instrumental in the switchover to electronic voting machines. And the political impetus for HAVA largely came out of the Florida hanging chads fiasco.

I remember in 2002 there were a lot of concerns here about black box voting. CNS News came out with a rah-rah-isn't-touchscreen-voting-great video. I naively let them know about the alleged problems with these machines, but of course they probably already knew.
