Will Bernie Sanderss supporters rally behind Hillary Clinton if she gets the nomination? Likewise, if Donald Trump is denied the Republican nomination, will his supporters back whoever gets the Republican nod?
If 2008 is any guide, the answer is unambiguously yes to both. About 90 percent of people who backed Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries that year ended up supporting Barack Obama in the general election. About the same percent of Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney backers came around to supporting John McCain.
But 2008 may not be a good guide to the 2016 election, whose most conspicuous feature is furious antipathy to the political establishment.

(454 posts)And Trump is a stronger candidate than many will admit.
In the end, GOTV will be key if Hillary hopes to win and the Primary fight has been mostly anemic compared to the Republicans. This tells me that they are very energized. Once more, Trump is killing it in that primary, he is performing exceptionally well. I suspect he has supporters beyond what people will admit to, and his base is very motivated.
Hillary has done well in solely Democrat contests, but among independents she fares a lot worse.
Will Bernie Voters vote Trump? I doubt it, but I suspect a few will as there is a lot of strong talk about it and most of these people are not registered Democrats in a party loyalty sense. What is more likely is the young voters bleed out, become disaffected and simply stop caring. Some, a sliver will go to Trump, and Hillary will have to scramble to GOTV.
Running as "Not Trump," might help, but then again Kerry ran as "Not Bush," and he did not win either.

(25,699 posts)At the moment she seems to be set on the path of "I can win without those losers!" Likewise, her fanclub seems to relish the idea of a total purge of Sanders supporters, their issues, and sympathetic members of the party.
Any chance of that changing between now and November? 'Cause we're not planning to throw away our positions and platforms.
