(17,320 posts)What happened to that law?
Agnosticsherbet
(11,619 posts)It did n I think outlaw promoting a partisan message. It required the media to give equal time.
That, and laws that kept anyone from owning all the media outlets, we're repealed under Reagan.

(17,320 posts)that Reagan had gotten the law repealed. Thanks for jogging my memory about the name "Fairness Doctrine".

(41,153 posts)of almost all US news media including newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations that are now controlled by 5 or 6 giant media conglomerates was enabled by the 1996 Telecom Act. The Act eliminated previous limits/rules on media ownership, eg any one company was barred from controlling all newspapers, radio and television stations in a city or specific area. New US concentration of media with few owners clearly doesn't encourage varying or balanced viewpoints.
In 1983, more than 50 companies owned 90% of US news outlets. Since the 1996 Telecom Act, American journalism has declined and the five giant media monopolies that control 90% of all US news today are:
- Disney (ABC), Viacom (CBS), Comcast (NBC/MSNBC; prior GE-owned), Time Warner (CNN), News Corp/Murdock (FOX).
- Washington, Post, 'Everything You Need to Know about the Fairness Doctrine in One Post', 8/2011.

(39,909 posts)The Media Consolidation Act of 1996 was far more insidious than the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine,
and did more damage to our Nation and our Democracy.

(41,153 posts)and other organizations still hold a lot of appreciation. In 2003 I remember when FCC Chair Michael Powell was asked what he thought of coverage of the Iraq War, and he replied 'thrilling.' Nothing better than a bloody, illegal war for good infotainment, showbiz and ratings. ~ Mainstream American journalism is mostly finished we know and our democratic institutions are in serious decline.
Powell hit some snags with consolidation plans though, including outspoken Congressional criticism of monopoly media by Bernie Sanders as reported in The Nation, "Up in Flames, The Public Revolts Against Monopoly Media." By John Nichols and Robert W. McChesney, Oct. 30, 2003. http://www.thenation.com/article/flames/

(41,153 posts)should take the time to view it and spread the word. Chomsky's thoughts and perspectives superbly pull it all together.

(11,076 posts)Amazing how the people around here ignored the fact. All they had to do was watch a rally on TV. Instead they believed the media. I guess if the media has been in your corner you don't go questioning things. Very sad. I figure the Bernie rally's were like Obama's. We had the opportunity to go to several. The energy was awesome and the mix of people was inspiring. A real medium for growth.

(1,151 posts)They are evil. They use propaganda constantly. The scream terrorism every chance they get. They use subliminal messaging to plant thoughts in our mind. They do it to our children. They run political adds designed to create anxiety and expose our children to them. Planting seeds of fear. First they constantly remind you what the truth is. Hillary is winning , all Muslims are terrorists, if it's POC there's gangs involved. They remind us that they are fair and balanced and that's the biggest insult because they are sure we are idiots. It's all about mass thought projection. Think this, worry about this , watch out they are coming to get you. Gays are bad, poor people are bad because they are lazy, drugs are bad, just cheap drugs though not your high end stuff rich kids like. Pot head ae so funny , we lock up one million in private prisons, it's funny.
Did not use to be this way. Ronald Reagon left a mess .
